Islay Golf Club – Captain’s Update August 2024
Dear Fellow Members,
As summer seems to have passed us by in a flash, it’s good to reflect on the range of competitions that the club has delivered and that you have had the chance to enjoy over the last couple of months. Club Championship 2024 In what seems like a distant memory, the annual club championships took place on the 17/18th June. Delighted to announce the 2024 Club Champion is Jack Shaw! Congratulations
Jack for a brilliant victory! Not to be outdone, Jack’s Dad Robert scooped the handicap champion victory too – some weekend for the Shaw’s!
Cross Week 2024
Without re-writing Kenny Swan’s great article in the Ileach, I do want to say how much I enjoyed (eventually) my week at the helm during Cross Week 2024. My summary would be that golf was a winner, with some 500 rounds played, lots of great sportsmanship and golf was on display. I am sure you will agree that we had some hard fought battles to deliver deserved winners of the Ladies, gents, Junior &Senior Cross prizes. My congratulations to all participants, helpers, winners and to
those who were orphaned at home for the week! Cross Dinner in the Ramsay Hall took a bit of organising (and clearing up), but I am sure those who were able to attend will agree that it was worth it!
For the first time in a while, the club were able to make a small profit over the balance of Cross Week, and a special thanks to the RNLI who ran our Cross Dinner bar, making £935 for their funds, plus a few pounds in their donation tine. Great to get such a meaningful partnership involved.
The Kildalton Cross Week Honors go to:
Junior Cross Winner – James Woodrow
Senior Plate Winner – Ian D Tilke
Gents Plate Winner – Alexander Reid
Senior Cross Winner – Fraser Alexander
Ladies Cross Winner – Susan Middleton
Gents Cross Winner – David Lind

Islay Golf Club Pairs 2024
As the Machrie are not running their traditional Pairs & Teams events this October,
IGC have taken the 19/20th October to run a club Pairs event. This event is open to
all club members and mixed teams are very welcome!
Entry is £60 per pair (£30 each). Spaces are filling up, but we still have room for you,
so please grab yourself a partner and book up using the link below:
IGC Developments
We are currently looking at Master Scoreboard and how we can utilise the facility to
enter scores direct. This can also allow us live leaderboard scoring online and
reduce the burden on our Match Secretary to have to enter all the scores. Watch this
space.
The Machrie
Alan Martin has successfully taken on the new role of Golf General Manager. Alan has been actively engaged in our club planning and was a huge help over Cross Week.
The Machrie are keen to refresh our (outdated) legal agreement and I will be working with Alan on this. More to follow.
Machrie intend to put in a new tee booking system in January 2025. One of the benefits of this can be to give IGC members a ‘Members Card’ which can be used in the restaurant and Pro shop to apply your discount. This facility could become available to us around membership renewal in April. Again, watch this space for updates.
Machrie are also looking to build their caddie capability, and we will shortly pass on the details for any of our members who wish to be considered for caddie duty. New posts of Starter & Marshal are also to be created and again, we will pass on the details of these roles, should any member wish to be considered.
Dates for your Diary 2025
Islay Golf Club Open – 10/11th May
Club Championships – Ladies, Gents & Juniors – format & date still to be decided
Cross Week – 2-8th August
Best regards,
Brian
