Captains Message - Cross Week

Firstly, I would like to thank all members for affording me the privilege of being Captain of Islay Golf Club.  Being piped onto the first tee under the Guard of Honour was a real thrill for Fiona and I.  I was also thrilled with being able to hit two reasonable drives off the first tee!!  As I said at the Cross Dinner, I hope to be more than a Cross Week Captain and intend to be fully involved in the exciting times ahead as Islay Golf Club moves into a new era in partnership with the Machrie Hotel.
If I were to thank everyone who assisted last week in making the Kildalton Cross 2017 so special I would probably 'Crash' the website.  Suffice to say that the players, their families, members and friends all made it a week that will live long in my memory.
Congratulations to everyone who participated in the week from the Western Ferries through to the Soutter Trophy.  In particular, congratulations to our Cross Champion, Gordon Macmillan, not just an outstanding golfer but a thoroughly good guy.  The appreciation of his golf and genuine affection for Gordon were very obvious at the Cross Dinner - I will never forget the spontaneous chanting of 'GORDY, GORDY!' when he stood up to speak.  Congratulations also to Iain Gray, Diane Brown, Colin Campbell and Grant Doyle for their success in the Senior Cross, Ladies Cross Kildalton Plate and Junior Cross respectively.
To conclude, I would like to thank our main sponsor, Islay Flooring, for their ongoing support to Islay Golf Club and Western Ferries and Bunnahabhain for sponsoring the team events on Saturday and Sunday.
Only 51 weeks to go until Kildalton Cross 2018.  I, for one, cannae wait.

In the light of preliminary discussions with the new hotel management, Islay Golf Club has now closed its Country Membership list to new applications (those few currently in train will be accepted). This DOES NOT AFFECT existing Country Members. Those who are currently "retained" will be given a once only opportunity to upgrade next season, or they can do so now.

Any new applications will be placed on a waiting list. There will be a cap on the number of Country Members to be agreed with the Hotel, at which point the waiting list will be contacted with up to date information on the likelhood of gaining membership.

Local memberships are still available - for the time being, "local" means if your main place of residence is on Islay or Jura or if you have frequent access to your holiday home here. Other requests will be dealt with on a case by case basis.
